A classic hypothetical scenario – what would you do if you found a $1 million lottery ticket? For most, the next step is a foregone conclusion; how does one begin spending this newfound wealth? A gas station clerk in Salina Kansas had a very different response.
The cashier found the Mega Millions ticket on the floor of the gas station. The unclaimed ticket did not have a signature. Even more shocking, it was worth a whopping $1 million prize.
Instead of claiming the ticket for himself, the cashier called the store the ticket came from. He made contact with the store and explained what happened. The original buyer happened to be running other errands when he passed by the store.
“We had already been home for about an hour, and then went out and ran another errand. As we passed the store, the owner’s son pulled out behind us and flagged us down. He explained what happened and handed me the ticket, and I just couldn’t believe it!”
He further explained, “My brother went in to check my tickets. He apparently dropped the unsigned Mega Millions ticket, and then we left to go back home.”
Residents in Lincoln, the town where the ticket was sold, began to ponder the winner’s identity. The town is a small, close-knit community.
“It’s just nice to know there are still good Samaritans around, not just pure greed,” says Snak Atak clerk Shelly Thomas.
